Ouya Kickstarter Ends Strong, Inches Closer to $8,000,000

The Ouya Kickstarter is ending almost as strongly as it started as it inches closer to $8,000,000. Considering that the original goal was a mere $950,000, that’s not too shabby. Developed by Boxer8, Ouya is a novel take on the home console, an Android-based, open-source console that will retail for less than $100. It’s definitely been picking up steam over the last month, with developers such as Infinity Ward and Square Enix signing on to bring their games over to the platform. More compelling than that, at least to the indie/homebrew community, is the included SDK, which will basically allow you to develop software and hack the platform to use in any way you’d like (hacking is encouraged).

While it remains to be seen how well the platform can compete with established platforms, as it’s basically aimed at the home console (TV) market, but has more in common with mobile Android gaming, I have to admit that this is probably the most excited I’ve been about a platform since the Dreamcast. If you’re so-compelled, there’s still time to get in on the Kickstarter
